3 Nagas Hotel: historic boutique hotel in Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang is one of the most enchanting places on earth, not because there are grand monuments to see, but because of the solitude and spiritual quality of the town. It has been a UNESCO Heritage site since 1995 which means it carefully preserves the colonial buildings, traditional teak wood houses and Buddhist temples. Located on a peninsula where the Mekong and Khan rivers meet, its natural beauty remains unspoiled.

3 Nagas Hotel

The 3 Nagas Hotel is one of the most historic buildings in Luang Prabang. Restored in 2003, it offers 15 rooms and 3 suites divided over two heritage houses (Lamache House and Khamboua House, both of which are over 100 years old) across one another on the main street of Luang Prabang. Rooms are individually decorated and feature dark hardwood floors, canopy king sized beds, and private terraces.

We stayed at 3 Nagas in January 2011, but we got a room on the ground floor in the Lamache House next to the restaurant and the street, which I do not recommend. It is a bit too noisy. Try to get a room upstairs in the Khamboua House which faces a beautiful private garden that overlooks the Khan River.

The 3 Nagas has an excellent restaurant which serves Laotian cuisine and Western food. Their breakfasts are wonderful, especially the pheu, a Laotian noodle soup that resembles Vietnamese pho (see photo below). In the early mornings, you can also join the locals in making offerings of food to the monks who reside in a nearby temple.

The Alila group has just opened a 23-suite luxury resort hotel called the Alila Luang Prabang outside the town in a quiet secluded location. It has swimming pool and offers spa and massage treatments. The disadvantage to staying outside Luang Prabang is you cannot just walk out of your hotel and enjoy the lively day and night markets, hang out in cafes and shop at local artisans’ boutiques. Indeed the best thing about Luang Prabang is simply being able to walk or bike around the town and the neighboring villages. If you stay at the other Alila, you have to take their van to come into Luang Prabang.
