Abbaye de la Bussiere: luxurious country house hotel in Burgundy

If you are searching for solitude and want to stay in a place with history and luxurious comforts, the Abbaye de la Bussière near Dijon is one of the most atmospheric places in the area. Combining a stay in the Abbaye with an exploration of the Burgundy wine region sounds like a most ideal way to spend a short break.

The abbey was founded in 1131 by an Englishman, Stephen Harding, third Abbot of Cîteaux. Throughout its history it has received religious groups and pilgrims for spiritual retreats. In 2001, the Abbey was acquired and renovated by Clive and Tanith Cummings, who converted it into an intimate country house hotel, a daunting task, given the religious, historic and architectural sensitivity of the buildings and their significance to the local community. The Cummings family have had experience renovating a historic property in England – the Amberley Castle in West Sussex – so this was not an amateur undertaking. Today, Clive and Tanith live with their four children on the premises and continue the abbey’s tradition of hospitality. Indeed, the Abbaye is now part of the Relaix & Châteaux group and has become a highly regarded countryside retreat for people exploring Burgundy.

The Abbaye has rooms and suites varying in size and decor. All have been designed individually in the traditional French style, with ensuite bathrooms. Each room has a stunning view of the park and lake. Apart from the austere beauty of the abbey buildings, guests can enjoy the 15 acres of beautiful parkland. There is also an excellent gastronomic restaurant (awarded one Michelin star) run by chef Emmanuel Hébrard, who uses fresh produce from the region to create sumptuous dishes in the Burgundian tradition with a modern twist.

The Abbaye is also an ideal location for weddings and meetings. Contact the Abbaye in advance so they can help you plan your event. Rates for a double room start at 210 EUR per night (winter season); in the summer season, rates begin at 265 EUR per night.
