Aureum Palace Hotel: luxury resort amidst the pagodas of Bagan, Burma

Aureum Palace Hotel, set in the open fields surrounded by pagodas in Bagan, Myanmar (Burma) is the place to stay if you are going to visit Bagan, an ancient city whose countryside is dotted with over 2000 temples, stupas and pagodas. There are many excellent hotels in Bagan, but on my trip to Burma in January 2011, I stayed at the Aureum Palace Hotel. The breathtaking views from the pool and the restaurant are among the best in this area.

The Aureum Palace Hotel has deluxe rooms and individual villas around a lovely lake and lush tropical gardens. The Honeymoon Villa has its own little island in the middle of the lake. There is also an excellent spa that offers massages and beauty treatments. The infinity pool, set on a ledge overlooking two pagodas, is enormous. The restaurant serves wonderful Burmese food and Western cuisine. The breakfast buffet’s Burmese and Asian dishes (e.g. rice noodle soup with garnishes of hot peppers, fish sauce and fresh coriander) are a great way to start a day of sightseeing.

At night, the lights around the pool and restaurant create a romantic, dreamy atmosphere. If you want to get a more spectacular view of the area, you can take the elevator to the top of the hotel’s viewing tower.
