B2 Boutique Hotel Zurich is a 52-room design hotel housed in an old brewery which has been renovated to contemporary standards. B2 Boutique Hotel Zurich is centrally located, with good transport connections and parking.
History of B2 Boutique Hotel
The hotel is housed in the old Hürlimann brewery, which was founded in Zurich in 1836 and run by the Hürlimann family for five generations. The first building was opened on the current site in 1870. In the 1990s, the brewery firm merged with another company and moved to a different location. The industrial site and its buildings were converted to other uses: lofts, shops, offices and restaurants. The architects retained the historical “bones” of the buildings and created beautiful spaces for working and relaxing. Today, companies such as Google, have offices on the site of the old brewery and one of the buildings was turned into the B2 Boutique Hotel.
Rooms at B2 Boutique Hotel
There are four types of rooms:
(1) B2 Boutique rooms: Between 24 and 28 square metres, queen-sized beds, parquet floors and open bathroom, good for solo travellers and short stays.
(2) Hürlimann Executive rooms: Between 25 and 38 square metres, top floor, parquet floors and open bathroom, a king-sized bed, good for couples or solo travellers.
(3) Junior Suite: Measures 52 square metres, an open bathroom with a rain shower and a separate toilet, parquet floors, ideal for longer stays, couples, travellers who want more space.
(4) Hürlimann Suite: The largest of the rooms, these suites measure 55 square metres and are located in the former cold storage area of the historical brewery. The visible cold storage fins convey an unmistakeably industrial character. The living room with a separate dining space and bar cabinet is located on the first floor, as is a bathroom with a rain shower. The bedroom is on the second floor and has a king-sized bed, generous workspace and bathtub. The suite has parquet floors. In addition to the standard room fittings, the suite includes a trouser press, while flat-screen TVs are provided on both floors.
Amenities of B2 Boutique Hotel
There is basic (not so fast) free Wi-Fi in all rooms and very fast wired broadband service. Other amenities include air conditioning, Nespresso machine, and a safe with a laptop/mobile device charging socket (this is one of the amenities that guests appreciated most and I don’t understand why most hotels still don’t have it).
The Impressive Library Lounge of the B2 Boutique Hotel
Home to 33,000 books, the Library Lounge is the heart of the B2 Boutique Hotel. In all my travels I’ve never seen a library as impressive as this one in any hotel, enclosed in a space that is dedicated to reading and writing. The 11-metre high ceiling makes you feel like you’re in a cathedral for books. Many of the books come from an antiquarian bookshop but you can come with your own book (or ebook reader) and spend an afternoon or evening in solitude with your nose buried in your book.
B2 Boutique Hotel Thermal Bath and Spa for the hedonist in you
When you feel like a break from your literary pursuits, take advantage of the hotel’s Thermal Bath and Spa which is spread over 3,300 square metres in the former barrel filling area of the brewery. The spa is actually built into the old barrel vaults of the former brewery and its simple brick walls lend an atmosphere reminiscent of a monastery. Huge metal tanks in the vaulted cellars have been replaced by basins made of larch wood, a reminder of the large beer barrels used in the brewery. You can get beauty treatments and massages at the spa. If you prefer to bathe outdoors, go up to the roof and plunge into the 150 square metre outdoor swimming pool which affords you a view of Zurich and the mountains around it.
It is encouraging to see modern new boutique hotels like B2 Boutique Hotel opening in Zurich. This is a city where until recently, most business and “grand” hotels continued to receive guests in either standard boring corporate spaces or rooms furnished with fusty old period pieces and worn carpeting from another century. One can only hope that B2 Boutique Hotel inspires a renaissance in hotel design in Zurich.
