Hosteria La Cienaga: historic hacienda hotel in Ecuador

Hosteria La Cienaga (also known as Hacienda La Cienaga) is a dreamy hacienda set amidst lush tropical gardens at the base of the Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador. Attached to the hacienda is an atmospheric chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary. Built in the 1700s, it has withstood the ravages of time, earthquakes and the volcano Cotopaxi’s eruption; it has hosted luminaries such as Alexander von Humboldt  (1802).

Hacienda La Cienaga is a perfect place to stay if you plan to climb the Cotopaxi volcano (at 5897 meters, one of the five highest active volcanoes in the world). For the less adventurous, there’s the stunning Quilotoa crater lake formed by the collapse of a volcano that erupted 800 years ago and the vast Cotopaxi National Park, which you can visit with a local guide. The hacienda’s tranquil surroundings make it an ideal retreat for couples on a honeymoon or for people seeking serenity and refuge from the busy world. There is also a terrific restaurant on the premises so if you don’t feel like venturing out in the evening, you can stay at the hosteria and still have a great dinner.
