As our readers know, this site does not often write about large hotels that belong to multinational chains and that we prefer to focus on small, intimate boutique hotels. However, the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is an exception: a well-run 5-star luxury hotel, set on 37 acres of landscaped grounds in the traditional Newari style of Nepalese architecture.
This beautiful hotel and resort is located within a five-minute walking distance from the Boudhanath Stupa – the most holy of Tibetan Buddhist shrines outside Tibet and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another distinct advantage to staying at the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is that it is only 4 kilometres from the Tribhuvan International Airport and 6 kilometres from the city centre of Kathmandu. This significance will become apparent to you after you land in Kathmandu and make your way through the traffic-clogged streets where it may take 20 minutes to advance one kilometre while smoke-belching trucks, buses and motorcycles cut off your oxygen supply.
Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has excellent panoramic views of the Boudhanath Stupa and the surrounding snow-capped mountain ranges.
All rooms are well-equipped and spacious with a private bathroom, walk-in shower, in-room safe and mini bar. Guests at the Regency Club rooms and suites enjoy additional privileges and facilities such as the use of the boardroom, a dedicated concierge, evening cocktails and canapés. Because the hotel is set back far from the main roads and alleyways, you do not hear the incessant beeping horns of motorcycles and cars, a cacophony that will drive you crazy in Kathmandu.
The four restaurants and bars at the hotel ensure the perfect dining experience with an array of cuisine options. The Café features a show kitchen and serves international cuisine. Rox Restaurant is the hotel’s signature restaurant and features a kitchen with wood-fired oven; it serves traditional home-style Southern European cuisine. Rox Bar has an island bar and offers a wide selection of beverages. The Lounge is a convenient and comfortable meeting venue and serves speciality beverages, light meals and afternoon tea selection. The Terrace serves light food, healthy meals, salads, juices and refreshing cocktails.
Guests can stay fit at the hotel’s fitness centre – Club Oasis, which features a well-equipped fitness centre, a health and beauty spa, two outdoor swimming pools-one for adults and one for children, indoor and outdoor whirlpool, tennis courts and 1.6 km jogging track. The only downside to the hotel is the extra charge for Wi-Fi service. Why is it that 5-star hotels tend to charge for Wi-Fi while 3-star hotels and hostels offer it for free?
