La Residencia: superb luxury hotel and spa in Mallorca

La Residencia is a luxury hotel and spa located in the most beautiful part of Mallorca, its northwest coast, surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range. It is set in 30 acres of olive and citrus groves on a hilltop in Deia, a quaint artists’ village where the poet Robert Graves lived and wrote his best works. The hotel was created from two private 16th and 17th century manor houses – Son Moragues and Son Canals.

Today Deia is primarily a tourist destination and holiday spot where multi-million dollar fincas owned by celebrities have made the village out of the price range of most artists. Nevertheless, Deia and the surrounding countryside continue to attract hikers, bicyclists and visitors who want to enjoy its tranquility and natural beauty.

For those whose idea of a holiday is lazing around the pool and indulging in spa activities, La Residencia offers an unparalleled spa experience with a variety of massage and beauty treatments on hand. They have three swimming pools: two outdoor and one indoor. They also have a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

If you prefer an active holiday, La Residencia is one of the best places to stay in this part of Mallorca because it is right off the hiking trail from Deia to Soller (or Deia to Valldemossa). Cyclists will love the steep, winding mountain roads and the hotel will even rent you mountain bikes, should you wish to do a few challenging climbs. Swimmers should head down to Cala Deia, a small protected cove which has a wonderful restaurant overlooking the beach. Tennis fanatics should check out the hotel’s two tennis courts, a rarity among Mallorcan hotels.

La Residencia has single and double rooms, suites and even a villa (for those who prefer a self-catering holiday and privacy). All rooms and suites are furnished with antique Mallorquin furniture, TV, DVD and mp3 players, and free Wi-Fi. Some have private terraces, balconies and views over Deia and the sea.

Whether or not you are staying at La Residencia, you should dine at their restaurant, El Olivo. It is known for exceptional Meditarranean cuisine and romantic ambiance. The restaurant offers a tasting menu in addition to its a la carte dishes (and vegetarian menu). You must reserve in advance for El Olivo because it’s very popular among locals and visitors. If you prefer something more casual, the hotel’s Son Morragues Terrace and Bar offers tapas, lunch and afternoon tea.

Rates for a double room vary dramatically depending on the season. They can be as low as €230 per night or go higher than €500. You have to check their website when you reserve.
