Mint Hotel opens in Amsterdam: central location, great views of the city

A new hotel has opened in Amsterdam, only a few minutes walk from the Central Station and Dam Square, and almost next door to one of my favourite places in the city — the Central Library. The hotel is called Mint Hotel (part of a small hotel chain in the UK) and it has 553 guest rooms with stunning views over the city. Its rooftop sky lounge overlooking the oldest part of Amsterdam may just be the perfect place to catch dinner or have drinks with friends and colleagues.

Amsterdam has few rooftop cafes and restaurants, so this is a welcome addition to the city’s lively cafe and restaurant scene. The one I’ve been going to is the cafe in the Central Library, a stunning edifice next to the Mint Hotel, which opened a few years ago. If you get a chance, visit the Central Library. Its contemporary architecture, terrific collection of books in many languages, and super high-speed broadband (they have a fiber connection) make it one of my favorite hangouts in the city.

Clearly the Mint Hotel’s location and its contemporary decor set it apart from other other hotels in this area, which have lagged behind in modernizing their interiors and offering better amenities for travelers. The Central Station is only a few minutes walk, so you can take the direct train to Schiphol Airport (20 minutes). The Central Station is also the place where all of the trams to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark, and Leidseplein arrive and depart, so for getting around Amsterdam by tram, the Mint Hotel is ideal.

If you prefer walking, Dam Square is about 10 minutes away, and the Rijksmuseum is further away – 30 minutes – but if you fancy a lovely walk through the canals, the delightful shopping streets (Negen Straatjes or Nine Streets area), this is the best way to see Amsterdam. Another area not to miss are KNSM Eiland and Zeeburg, new housing developments to the east of the hotel. They are easy to reach by tram or preferably, by bike, and feature apartment buildings with contemporary design. The Lloyd Hotel is also in that direction.

If you are planning an event such as a conference or a meeting, the Mint Hotel is an ideal place to hold it because of the proximity of the Central Station. People coming by train or air can easily reach the Mint Hotel. They have 19 meeting rooms of varying sizes and since this is a new hotel, all the high tech amenities you expect are also present.

Now about the rooms. Each one comes with an Apple iMac TV and computer and lots of natural light coming from floor-to-ceiling windows that you can actually open to get fresh air. Bathrooms are fitted with a walk-in power shower and mist-free mirror, luxury bathroom amenities from the White Company, and dressing gowns and slippers are provided as standard. Although the hotel is located in a busy area next to the train station, the rooms are quite sound-proof. But best of all: free Wi-Fi in guest rooms (note: most Amsterdam hotels charge exorbitant amounts of money for Wi-Fi). Rates for a double room start at 200 EUR per night.
