Nakamanda Resort and Spa: peaceful hideaway in Krabi, Thailand

Nakamanda Resort Krabi Thailand

I had a chance to stay at the Nakamanda Resort and Spa in Krabi, Thailand this month and it was heavenly. I had never been to Krabi and I feared that the beach would be lined with large resort hotels, endless rows of beach chairs and tourists. I was wrong.

The Nakamanda Resort is located on Klong Muang Beach, a secluded part of Krabi. When you walk out onto the sand from the swimming pool (shown above), you encounter very few people. You can hire a boat and venture out to the islands that dot this tranquil bay, which is great for swimming because there are no waves. Indeed, the sheltered position of the Nakamanda proved a life saver during the tsunami of 2004 – the waves did not reach beyond the swimming pool.

The hotel is perfect for those seeking solitude and silence. There are only 36 suites (two in each villa, one upstairs, the other downstairs). Each suite has one large bedroom, sitting room, outdoor patio with comfortable chairs, a plunge bathtub and separate shower, his-and-hers bathroom sinks and closets. I stayed in one of the suites and believe me, it is more than enough for two people. The lush gardens of the Nakamanda Resort are beautifully landscaped with tropical plants and trees. I couldn’t stop myself from taking photos (see below). It is a photographer’s dream.

For those who want a villa all to themselves, there are two options:

  • Jacuzzi Villa (84 square metres) with a private jacuzzi, pantry and private sun deck;
  • Pool Villa (315 square metres) set at the top of the resort with sweeping views of the Andaman Sea. It has 2 free-standing bedrooms, living room, Jacuzzi and private pool. The Pool Villa is a terrific option for two families or a big group of friends.

The food at the Nakanamda is very delicious. I had the Thai breakfast every morning: a savoury rice porridge, to which I added large amounts of coriander, dried hot red peppers, fish sauce, and ginger. I finished it off with a plateful of papaya, dragonfruit and pineapple.

You can eat outside right at the edge of the sand. In the evenings, they place candles on the tables, making the dining experience truly magical and romantic. Not surprisingly, people who were not staying at the resort would come to the Nakamanda for dinner. All in all, the guests at the Nakamanda were quiet and respectful, and kept to themselves.

One of the best features of the resort is the swimming pool. It is difficult to see from the photos above just how large it is. I love swimming so this enormous pool was my favorite part of the hotel. If swimming is not your cup of tea, try the relaxing massages and beauty treatments. The resort can also organize cooking classes, day trips, snorkeling and other activities. I recommend that you walk down the road from the hotel and check out the small family owned restaurants, bars and shops. I have a vivid memory of a wonderful ginger salad I ordered at a local restaurant; the melange of flavours – spicy, sweet, salty, piquant – exploded in my mouth. So although the Nakamanda serves great food, you should definitely try out the local places.

The Nakamanda Resort has special rates for different times of the year, as well as holiday packages. It is a very popular spot for weddings and wedding parties, so book in advance.

I spent the last three weeks in Southeast Asia, visiting Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia. The Nakamanda was the best place I stayed in and I recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet beach holiday in Southeast Asia.
