Queenstown Park Hotel: luxurious boutique hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand

If you are looking for a luxurious intimate boutique hotel with stylish decor and great service, look no further than the Queenstown Park Hotel which is located only five minutes from the heart of Queenstown. We stayed at the Queenstown Park Hotel for a week in early December before the holiday rush and greatly enjoyed the experience. Here is what we loved about the hotel and why we would come back again:

(1) Excellent service: The staff helped us book an amazing helicopter tour of Milford Sound and provided restaurant recommendations in Queenstown and Arrowtown, all of which turned out to be very good (they also booked tables for us at various restaurants).

(2) Decor: Modern furniture (from Punga & Smith) and urban design that is comfortable and relaxing. The suites are spacious and filled with light. In our suite, the glass-walled shower room also had a clear glass ceiling that gave one the impression of showering under the sky. Beds are king-sized and firm, with wonderful sheets and pillows. The lobby lounge feels like a cozy living room with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the park, comfy chairs and sofas, and a fireplace for those chilly evenings. We spent quite a bit of time in the lobby, reading, or sipping wine and eating hors d’oeuvres (see happy hour below) nestled on one of the stylish comfortable chairs.

(3) Location: The hotel is only five minutes’ walk from the center of town, but it is not right in the center, which gets noisy in the evening when locals and visitors party away. As a result you hardly hear anything and sleep soundly at night. It is bounded on one side by a large park ringed with trees, and on the other side by a smaller park used by paragliders for their landings (lots of fun to watch them gracefully glide down). The hotel rooms are well-insulated from noise.

(4) Complimentary happy hour: The pre-dinner happy hour is such a brilliant idea! The staff bring out excellent local red and white wines (we loved a particular Pinot Gris from the area) and delicious canapés. This daily gathering brings together guests and staff so you can inquire about others’ experiences with hiking tours, bungy jumps, Zip trek tours, and other things to do in the area. Because the hotel has only 19 rooms, it feels like a private lodge and the staff pay more attention to your needs.

(5) Small kitchen in the suite: We appreciated having a small kitchen (and fridge) in the suite because it allowed us to enjoy a healthy breakfast of muesli, excellent New Zealand yogurt, fruit, milk, and coffee without having to drag ourselves out into town or to the breakfast lounge. They have a coffee plunger in the kitchen, so all you have to do is buy the coffee. But uou don’t have to eat breakfast in your room; the hotel serves a proper breakfast in a large sunny room overlooking the park (see photo below).

Other important details concerning the hotel:

  • There is underground parking.
  • The Queenstown Gondola is just down the street. This gondola takes you to the top of Bob’s Peak where you can enjoy stunning views of the lakes and mountains around Queenstown, savour the thrills of a Zip Trek eco tour, challenge yourself with a long, arduous hike to Ben Lomond summit (5 hours) or ride a mountain bike down one of the many mountain bike trails from the summit. You can also do shorter hikes from the peak. Or if you are really lazy, have lunch at the Skyline restaurant.
  • If you are going on a day-long or half-day hike, the hotel offers lunch packages so you don’t need to make your own sandwiches.

Overall, our stay in Queenstown, New Zealand was greatly enhanced by the wonderful staff and the amenities of the Queenstown Park Hotel.
