Riad Kniza: atmospheric boutique hotel in Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech (or Marrakesh in English) is an easy and inexpensive three-hour flight from Paris, and a good escape from dark and cold Parisian winters.  Flights on Easy Jet can be as low as 100 Euro for the round-trip fare. We recently stayed several nights at Riad Kniza in the old medina of Marrakech.

Dating from the 18th century, Riad Kniza is a small, luxury “hotel de charme” in the heart of the old Médina of Marrakech, completely restored by Haj Mohamed Bouskri using traditional materials and artisans to recreate an authentic Moroccan experience as in days gone by.

Riad Kniza offers 11 rooms and suites built around three courtyards open to the sky. There is free WiFi, as well as a spa, hammam, swimming pool and a wonderful rooftop terrace with gorgeous views of the Atlas Mountains, which in the winter are covered with snow.

The Riad serves an excellent Moroccan breakfast on its rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the mountains.  The lush vegetation and calm in the Riad make you forget the chaos and noise of the Medina that is only minutes away. Dinner at the Riad is outstanding: you can choose from lamb, chicken or vegetarian tagines, which are served with soup, mezze, and desserts. In the winter, they light a fire in the fireplaces of the cozy rooms tucked away in the interior courtyards and serve breakfast and dinner there.

Day tours to the Atlas Mountains or to the beach at the old walled city of Essaouira are also easy to arrange at the Riad.  The staff was friendly and the service was excellent during our stay. The family who runs the Riad lives on the premises, so one feels like a guest at a home, while still having privacy.

What makes staying in this Riad much more special than in a regular hotel in Marrakech is that it is a beautifully restored historic house filled with the family’s exquisite antique collection. Moreover, the personal service is impeccable. They will help you arrange a tour with a guide or driver (or both) if you wish to explore the souk with its winding streets, ancient shops and ateliers, or if you want to do a short hike out in the Ourika Valley with its waterfalls and stunning landscapes (only 1 hour away).
