“Neighborhood restaurant” does not have to mean kitschy decor and floral-print tablecloth. Here in a pocket of San Francisco’s south of Market (SOMA), the locals have been going to the chic, recently opened Local Kitchen and Wine Merchant on Rincon Hill across the Metropolitan. A number of luxury apartment towers are going up in this area — One Rincon and the Infinity. Many units are already occupied and since there are virtually no restaurants in this part of town, Local serves as THE hangout for food and drink.
- Vibe: Industrial chic interiors, high ceilings, open kitchen; trendy urban crowd on weekdays, locals who live in the high-rises on weekends.
- Pros: The most delicious wood-fired thin crust pizza (my favorite is the veggie with artichokes, olives, tomatoes); excellent risotto and pasta, and a good selection of wine. The staff are welcoming and professional, so they make you feel that it is truly your neighborhood hangout. They serve brunch on weekends.
- Cons: no-man’s-land character of the area which is surrounded by high-rises, empty parking lots and construction sites. This will improve in a few years as the empty lots are filled in with apartment buildings.
It’s best to make a reservation but even if you don’t have one, there is a long bar and a communal table.
