If you are heading to Santiago, Chile, check out The Aubrey, a boutique hotel housed in a restored 1927 mansion that once belonged to a Chilean railway magnate. The house functioned for decades as a “salon” for Chilean politicians who would gather regularly for their legendary Thursday political lunches. Renovated between 2006 and 2009, the original Spanish Mission style features were carefully retained, but the remodelling was comprehensive, including: creating modern en-suite bathrooms throughout, replacing the roof and raising the attic ceiling, enlarging windows to add brightness to the rooms, and removing and replacing floors and beams.
The Aubrey is located at the foot of the Cerro San Cristóbal Hill within the Parque Metropolitano, one of the six largest urban parks in the world, a short stroll from Pablo Neruda’s beloved house La Chascona in the picturesque Barrio Bellavista, the touristic center of Santiago. There is also a wonderful restaurant on the premises – Pasta e Vino – which serves Italian fusion cuisine and is quite popular among locals. They serve hand prepared gnocchi, ravioli, fettucine and parpardelle, and boast of a selection of over 50 wines.
The hotel has only 15 rooms, each of which is decorated in a unique style. There’s free Wi-Fi in all rooms and the Brazilian breakfast is included in the room price. There is also a lounge deck and swimming pool. Room rates start at $240.
