Villa Elyane is a splendid bed and breakfast (maison d’hôtes) in the heart of Colmar, one of the most popular cities to visit in the Alsace region of France. Villa Elyane has three rooms and two suites, ranging in price from 155 EUR to 250 EUR, all of which are decorated in a contemporary style of soft neutral colours and warm fabrics.
All rooms have free Wi-Fi and air conditioning; each room has a coffee machine, too. Breakfast is included in the price of the room. Villa Elyane has a spa, a library that used to be the smoking room, and a lounge with billiards table.
Villa Elyane is only 300 metres from the Colmar TGV train station, making it a convenient place to stay if you come to Colmar by train. If you come by car, it is a good base for exploring the other towns in Alsace (the Route du Vin or Wine Route is 10 kilometres away).
History of Villa Elyane
Villa Elyane is a grand manor house built by Dr. George Schwartz and his wife, Alice Trimbach in the Roaring 20s (called “Années Folles” in France). Dr. Schwartz was a prominent physician who founded the Pasteur Hospital in Colmar. He and his wife had one child, a daughter, named Elyane, after whom the villa is named. Elyane grew up in the house and lived there with her husband for many decades, passing away in Strasbourg at the age of 85.
Art Nouveau of Villa Elyane
Dr. Schwartz commissioned several well-known artists from the École de Nancy (the Nancy School, which spearheaded the Art Nouveau movement in France) for the interiors of his family’s mansion: the lovely stained glass windows (by Jacques Gruber) and the stunning wooden staircase and intricate woodwork (by Jules Cayette, a pupil of Jacques Gruber). Villa Elyane has been restored to its original glory and the current owners have blended in modern design to create a house that is comfortable for guests, yet one that respects the tradition and artistic heritage of the original owners.
Villa Elyane was featured in 24 Hours in Alsace, a French TV program.
Villa Elyane is a rare gem: a beautifully restored family mansion filled with Art Nouveau interiors, whose rooms are decorated in a comfortable contemporary style, and with only five rooms, you feel as if you are staying in a private home.
