La Maison Rouge: charming bed and breakfast in Uzes (Languedoc)

La Maison Rouge is a lovely bed and breakfast in the ancient town of Uzès, an excellent base for exploring Nîmes, Arles and the Pont du Gard. Named after the original red brick façade of the building which was constructed in the 1830s, this B&B has four rooms, each with a distinctive style.

The Canopy Room has a neutral décor and includes a bathroom, walk-in shower and bathtub. Stone walls, a canopy over the bed and warm lighting bring a relaxing environment to this haven. The Chambre Blanche, while more modern than the Canopy Room, features more minimalist décor, with a peaceful ambiance. The Red Room, bathed in a warming shade of scarlet has a more luxurious feel. Red and gold bedding, thick, flowered carpets and a dark armoire round out the room to complement its theme. Finally, Suite 83 is a two-room suite featuring stone and wood, as well as bronze, beige and copper tones, with views over the Eure Valley. All rooms in La Maison Rouge include free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, good linens, a hair dryer and breakfast. Rates currently range anywhere from 95 euros a night to 185 euros a night depending on the room, date and number of people.

Uzès is one of the oldest Roman settlements in Languedoc, an area that, together with Provence, was called Gallia Narbonensis by the Romans. Uzès lies at the source of the Eure River and the Pont du Gard (the Roman aqueduct 25 kilometres away) carries water from the Eure to Nîmes.

Later, Uzès became the seat of the Dukes of Uzès who are the most important aristocratic family, next in line to the princes of the blood (the former royal family of France). The castle of the Dukes of Uzès is one of the most significant monuments in the town and is a must-see for visitors. If you like hiking, running and cycling, the Parc du Duché, located across the street from the B&B, has many public trails. The roads leading from Mount Bouquet to the cliffs of Cevennes are perfect for cyclists.
